Aug 18, 2023

The prestigious Shanghai Ranking, a renowned global list that evaluates the top 1000 universities in the world, has showcased the remarkable performance of Portuguese higher education institutions. Six esteemed universities from Portugal have consistently maintained their presence on this illustrious list.

The renowned Universities of Lisbon, Porto, Minho, Aveiro, Coimbra, and the Nova University of Lisbon have demonstrated unwavering excellence in academia. Notably, within the top 500 universities, we find the Universities of Lisbon, Porto, Minho, and Aveiro, all maintaining their positions from the previous year. The recent addition to this group is the University of Coimbra, which has successfully climbed the ranks and secured its position among these distinguished institutions. In the 2022 edition, Coimbra was ranked between the 501st and 600th positions.

It is worth mentioning that Portugal's presence within the top 500 has been steadily increasing since 2021. Initially, there were three Portuguese universities featured: Lisbon, Porto, and Minho, whereas Aveiro joined the rankings in 2022.

In the current rankings, the University of Lisbon and the University of Porto share the same prestigious position, both being placed within the top 300 higher education institutions worldwide. Following closely are Minho, Coimbra, and Aveiro, all securing positions in the esteemed range of the top 401 to 500 universities globally.

Moreover, the Nova University of Lisbon has also made its mark, joining the ranks of the top 1000 universities. Previously featured within the top 500 in the 2019 edition, this year it has been classified within the respected range of the 601st to 700th positions.

Published in China by the esteemed independent company Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, this year's ranking encompassed an evaluation of a staggering 2500 universities worldwide. The expanded ranking, which now includes the top 1000 institutions, takes into account six key indicators, such as the number of distinguished postgraduate students and professors awarded the Nobel Prize and Fields Medal, the presence of highly cited researchers in academic papers within their respective fields of expertise, and the number of articles published in esteemed journals like Science and Nature.
