Lisbon is One of the Cheapest Cities in Europe

Dec 15, 2023

Lisbon is considered one of the most affordable cities in Western Europe, according to the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU). This index measures the cost of living for people based on the comparison of over 400 prices of more than 200 goods and services in 173 cities worldwide. The data for this index is collected twice a year in March and September and is published in June and December.

Compared to Athens, the capital of Greece, Lisbon has a lower cost of living, as it was cheaper in the year 2022. However, in 2021, the capital of Greece was cheaper than Lisbon. In 2020, the two cities were on the same level.

In terms of other European cities, besides Athens, Lisbon is more affordable than, in ascending order, Stockholm, Rotterdam, Luxembourg, León, Rome, Brussels, Manchester, Berlin, Düsseldorf, Barcelona, Stuttgart, Amsterdam, Madrid, Edinburgh, Hamburg, Oslo, Munich, Milan, Reykjavík, Helsinki, Dublin, Frankfurt, London, Vienna, Copenhagen, Paris, Geneva, and Zurich.

The top 10 most expensive cities in the world are Zurich, Singapore, Geneva, New York, Hong Kong, Los Angeles, Paris, Tel Aviv, Copenhagen, and San Francisco. Conversely, Damascus is the most affordable city in the world, followed by Tehran and Tripoli.

In addition to its reputation as one of the most affordable cities in Western Europe, Lisbon also stands out as an attractive destination for those seeking to establish residence in Portugal. The city's affordability, as highlighted by the Economist Intelligence Unit's cost-of-living index, contributes to its allure as a unique and desirable place to live.
