Lisbon ranked 4th in the best cities for Expatriates

Dec 02, 2022

The Portuguese capital came in 4th place, among the best cities for expatriates in a ranking made by InterNations, concerning the quality of life, ease of adaptation and personal finances.

The warm and sunny weather, welcoming local gentry, culture, and nightlife are some of the main reasons expats enjoy living in Lisbon. Career prospects, however, are seen by foreigners in a negative way: 28% of the foreigners who came to the city consider that moving to Lisbon has not improved their career prospects (compared to 18% globally). In addition, more than a quarter of expats in Lisbon feel that, based on industry, qualifications, and role, they are not paid fairly for their work (compared to 20% globally).

In the overall rankings, Lisbon is fourth out of the 50 cities across the globe and is also in fifth place in three out of the five indices featured in the survey: Quality of Life, Personal Finance, and Ease of Settling In.

The survey revealed that Lisbon is one of the cities where expats feel happiest with their life abroad. It is also one of the best-rated cities on the Quality of Life Index, coming in 5th place. Almost all expats are happy with the climate and weather, ranking the city first in this regard.

The culture and nightlife are also highly appreciated as well as the opportunities for recreational sports. Most importantly, more than nine out of ten feel safe in Lisbon and find it easy to get around on foot and by bicycle.

Lisbon also ranks fifth in the Ease of Settling In Index, with particularly great results in the Local Friendliness (4th place) and Culture (2nd place) Subcategories. According to the survey, expats describe local residents as generally friendly, finding it easy to get used to the local culture and are generally happy with their social life in Lisbon.

The Expat Insider 2022 report analysed 50 expat destinations around the world and ranked them according to the quality of life for expats.

The survey asked expats to evaluate the ease of settling in, working abroad and personal finances in the city where they lived. The ranking also includes an Expat Essentials index, which looks at digital life, admin topics, housing, and language.

This year, four European cities made it into the top ten and Valencia was considered number one, then Lisbon in forth, followed by Madrid in fifth and Basel in the seventh position of the overall ranking.

The new government plans significant reforms to attract more foreign investment to Portugal.
